The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
