No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
