Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
