Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such drugs should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
